Secure Your Load Day and CVSA International Roadcheck

On Tuesday, state transportation safety officials and trucking industry representatives gathered at the Nisqually scale on I-5 north to kick off June 6 as “Secure Your Load Day.” The Washington State Patrol reports that debris on Washington roadways cause approximately 400 collisions every year. Unsecured loads account for 40% of litter on local highways. Secure Your Load Day originated with Robin Abel, the force behind Maria’s Law, which criminalizes improperly secured loads with fines from $215 to $5,000 and potential jail time. Abel pushed for the law after her 24-year-old daughter Maria Federici suffered nearly fatal injuries which left her blinded when unsecured particleboard from a rented trailer smashed through her car’s windshield on I-405 in Renton. Abel’s work has spread, attracting 43 other states and territories to participate in “Secure Your Load Day.”

Speaking at the event, Tom Walrath, Jr., president of the Washington Trucking Associations, related the importance of Secure Your Load Day to truck drivers, stating, “We want to ensure our drivers and the motorists we share the road with get home safe each and every day. . . Whether they are using tie-downs, nettings, tarps, or wrapping, we want to make sure our loads make it from point A to point B without incident.”

The news of Secure Your Load Day coincides with the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s 30th annual International Roadcheck three-day inspection and enforcement event from June 6 – 8.  This year’s event focuses on compliance with safe cargo securement regulations. The CVSA is emphasizing cargo securement safety to remind the trucking industry of its importance to highway safety. Commercial Motor Vehicle inspectors will be conducting high-volume, high-visibility North American Standard Level-1 Inspections of large trucks and buses at inspection sites, weigh stations, and roving patrol locations along major highways in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
